One Woman''s Search for Everything
Erscheinungsjahr: 2007
Gewicht: 212 gr / Abmessung: 18 cm
Von Gilbert, Elizabeth

A funny, tender, utterly beguiling story about a woman''s search for happiness.

It`s 3 a.m. and Elizabeth Gilbert is sobbing on the bathroom floor. She`s in her thirties, she has a husband, a house, they`re trying for a baby - and she doesn`t want any of it. A bitter divorce and a turbulent love affair later, she emerges battered and bewildered and realises it is time to pursue her own journey in search of three things she has been missing: pleasure, devotion and balance. So she travels to Rome, where she learns Italian from handsome, brown-eyed identical twins and gains twenty-five pounds, an ashram in India, where she finds that enlightenment entails getting up in the middle of the night to scrub the temple floor, and Bali where a toothless medicine man of indeterminate age offers her a new path to peace: simply sit still and smile. And slowly happiness begins to creep up on her.

The Autobiography
Erscheinungsjahr: 2011
16 page color insert
Hobby/Freizeit
Von O'Neal, Shaquille / Von MacMullan, Jackie

Shaquille "Shaq" O''Neal is a four time NBA champion and a three time NBA Finals MVP. After being an All-American at Lousiana State University, he was the number one draft pick by the NBA in 1992. Today in 2011, he''s still playing - in fact, at 38, Shaq is the oldest player in the NBA. His presence - both physically and psychologically - has made him a ruling force in the game for years.
But there is a lot more to Shaquille O''Neal than basketball.
Shaq is famous for his playful, sometimes provocative personality. He is outsize in both scale and persona. Whether acting in films like Kazaam, rapping on any of his five albums, challenging celebrities on his hit show "Shaq Vs.," studying for his PhD. or acting as a reserve police officer, Shaq has led a fascinating and rollicking life. In this candid new autobiography he discusses his colorful career, NBA victories, and his thoughts on major NBA names like Kobe Bryant, Phil Jackson, and Pat Riley.

What would possess a gifted young man recently graduated from college to literally walk away from his life? Noted outdoor writer and mountaineer Jon Krakauer tackles that question in his reporting on Chris McCandless, whose emaciated body was found in an abandoned bus in the Alaskan wilderness in 1992.

Described by friends and relatives as smart, literate, compassionate and funny, did McCandless simply read too much Thoreau and Jack London and lose sight of the dangers of heading into the wilderness alone? Krakauer, whose own adventures have taken him to the perilous heights of Everest, provides some answers by exploring the pull the outdoors, seductive yet often dangerous, has had on his own life. --Amazon.com

Kurzbeschreibung

Originally published in 1955, this must be one of the most dramatic adventures of our time. Clemens Forell, a German soldier, was sentenced to 25 years of forced labour in a Siberian lead mine after the Second World War.

Rebelling against the brutality of the camp, Forell staged a daring escape, enduring an 8000-mile journey across the trackless wastes of Siberia, in some of the most treacherous and inhospitable conditions on earth.

Bauer?s writing brilliantly evokes Forell?s desperation in the prison camp, and his struggle for survival and terror of recapture as he makes his way towards the Persian frontier and freedom.

Jeannette Walls's father always called her "Mountain Goat" and there's perhaps no more apt nickname for a girl who navigated a sheer and towering cliff of childhood both daily and stoically. In The Glass Castle, Walls chronicles her upbringing at the hands of eccentric, nomadic parents--Rose Mary, her frustrated-artist mother, and Rex, her brilliant, alcoholic father. To call the elder Walls's childrearing style laissez faire would be putting it mildly. As Rose Mary and Rex, motivated by whims and paranoia, uprooted their kids time and again, the youngsters (Walls, her brother and two sisters) were left largely to their own devices. But while Rex and Rose Mary firmly believed children learned best from their own mistakes, they themselves never seemed to do so, repeating the same disastrous patterns that eventually landed them on the streets. Walls describes in fascinating detail what it was to be a child in this family, from the embarrassing (wearing shoes held together with safety pins; using markers to color her skin in an effort to camouflage holes in her pants) to the horrific (being told, after a creepy uncle pleasured himself in close proximity, that sexual assault is a crime of perception; and being pimped by her father at a bar). Though Walls has well earned the right to complain, at no point does she play the victim. In fact, Walls' removed, nonjudgmental stance is initially startling, since many of the circumstances she describes could be categorized as abusive (and unquestioningly neglectful). But on the contrary, Walls respects her parents' knack for making hardships feel like adventures, and her love for them--despite their overwhelming self-absorption--resonates from cover to cover. --Brangien Davis
